The construction of a new fire station and 135 private residential apartments in four blocks, plus 39 affordable homes at 9-13 Bing Street, Isle of Dogs, London.
The residential accommodation has been constructed to either side and over the fire station. The main buildings are of reinforced concrete frame, up to nine stories high. The fire station is at basement, ground and first floor levels and there is also a basement car park.
A heavy steel transfer structure carries a steel frame four story residential link block over the fire station. One significant construction challenge was erecting this major steel structure, and then handing over the fire station in only 15 months to allow it to be commissioned by the fire and rescue service.
High quality external finishes include exposed structural steel, cedar, terracotta and render rain screen cladding. Extensive use has been made of curtain wall glazing in conjunction with brie soliel and window louvers to minimise heat gain within the structure.
The bathrooms for each unit where constructed as pods at Ardmore’s Enfield factory and lifted into the building as finished units. Balconies and balustrades where similarly manufactured in house, providing a consistent and quality controlled finish.
